Miniature bearded iris 'Alpine Lake', is always the first of the miniature bearded irises to bloom, and the miniatures are the first of the bearded irises to bloom. It's not the first of the irises though. Iris unguicularis 'Logan Calhoun' gets that distinction, blooming in warm spells in February. It's still blooming today. Flowers poking through the winter damaged foliage is part of its charm.
